Alert: currLks Locks in use num > n

What does it mean? What do I do about it?

Example alert from the ProTop Portal:

What does it mean?

This alert tells you the number of locks in the database has exceeded the threshold for this alert.

What to do?

Investigate why the number of concurrent locks is so high.  Is there unusual activity in the database? Open ProTop RT and look at the Table, Index, and User IO Activity panels. Does anything stand out? Was there a recent change introduced to this environment?

Check your Trends in the ProTop Portal, Select the Advanced Dashboard, scroll down to  Transactions and Locks, and study the Locking Activity chart at the right. Is this a spike? Is this a new normal?  If so, increase the threshold to a value you consider abnormal.
