Check these items to figure out why your pt3agent won't start (no tmp/pt3agent.[friendlyName].flg)

tmp/dbmonitor.*
tmp/pt3agent.[friendlyName].*
etc/dblist.cfg - Is the server name for the resource in question spelled correctly? It should be exactly what the "hostname" command on that server returns.
Is the friendly name unique on the server? It may be unique in your dblist.cfg, but is someone else running another instance of ProTop and using the same friendly name? (e.g. s2k)
Are there hidden characters in the configuration file? When in doubt, comment out the line in question and recreate it character by character. Do not cut and paste from anything but a text editor, this can introduce hidden characters.
