Alert: recRd num > 1500000

What does it mean? What do I do about it?

Example alert from the ProTop Portal:

What does it mean?

The number of record reads from the database has exceeded 1.5 million per second (and crossed the threshold for this alert). This may indicate abnormal application behavior during normal business hours. This amount of reads is not unusual for large batch jobs and reports but is usually expected to occur after hours.

What to do?

Investigate.  If you see this alert when users are expected to perform data entry, they are likely being hindered. Use ProTop RT and view the User IO Activity "u" panel to see which session does most of the reads.

See this article on Finding Code: Excessive Reads for more information.

Suppose you see this alert during off hours (expected). In that case, you can move this alert definition into the "scheduled" section of the etc/alert.*.cfg file so that it only trips during the data entry time of day.  See the Alert Scheduling section of the Alert Configuration article.
